parapsychology

Eric Lindblom

Parapsychology:

{Psi} "Frankly, I prefer the word "psi research" to "parapsychology." But the defenders of the latter term point out that for them "para" means "alongside of" not "beyond" or "outside of" psychology. And for me, psychology is  the scientific study of behavior, experience, and intention."

Stanley Krippner

Parapsychology:

{Psi} The field that studies paranormal phenomena.

Psi

{Psi} "Psi Phenomena: The term 'psi' was introduced by Thouless and Wiesner (1948) to be a neutral term for a variety of 'paranormal' phenomena, free of the implicit assumptions that are contained within labels such as psychokinesis ('movement by mind') or telepathy ('feeling or perception at a distance'), and of the whole assumption of paranormality.

It was originally split into two categories of psi-kappa and psi-gamma, denoting active and passive psi, the first subsuming those phenomena such as psychokinesis which appeared to involve an effect upon another system, the second covering phenomena such as extrasensory perception, which showed a more receptive aspect...

Psi has been defined as the 'unknown factor' in psychic experiences, and often this is modified as being a factor which is not reliant on the conventional sensorimotor channels."

{Psi} "Paranormal phenomena or faculties collectively; the psychic force supposed to be manifested by these. Freq. attrib. and Comb.

1942 R. H. THOULESS in Proc. Soc. Psychical Res. XLVII. 5, I suggest that we should use a term proposed by Dr Wiesner, and call this group of effects [sc. extra-sensory perception] the ‘psi phenomena’, a term which has the important negative merit that it implies no theory as to their nature. Ibid. 8 Accepting the reality of psi, we may seek to fit it into the existing framework of scientific explanation.

1946 Jrnl. Parapsychol. X. 146 Psi, a general term to identify personal factors or processes in nature which transcend accepted laws. It approximates the popular use of the word ‘psychic’ and the technical one, ‘parapsychical’.

 Oxford English Dictionary:

{Psi} "Telepathy : Direct mind-to-mind communication.

  • Precognition: Also called premonition. Obtaining information about future events, where the information could not be inferred through normal means. Many people report dreams that appear to be precognitive.
  • Clairvoyance : Sometimes called remote viewing; obtaining information about events at remote locations, beyond the reach of the normal senses.
  • ESP: Extra-sensory perception; a general term for obtaining information about events beyond the reach of the normal senses. This term subsumes telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition.
  • Psychokinesis : Also called PK; direct mental interaction with physical objects, animate or inanimate.
  • Bio-PK : Direct mental interactions with living systems.
  • NDE : Near death experience; an experience reported by those who were revived from nearly dying. Often refers to a core experience that includes feelings of peace, OBE, seeing lights and other phenomena.
  • OBE : Out-of-body experience; the experience of feeling separated from the body, often accompanied by visual perceptions as though from above the body.
  • Reincarnation: Reports, typically from children, of apparent recollections of previous lives...
  • Psi : A neutral term for parapsychological phenomena. Psi, psychic, and psychical are synonyms."
